Sam Liccardo

Mayor, City of San José

Mayor Sam Liccardo became San José's 65th Mayor in January of 2015, and was reelected in 2018 with 76 percent of the vote. Previously, Liccardo served two terms on San Jose City Council.

After his education at San José's Bellarmine Prep, Georgetown University, Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Law School, Liccardo began his public service prosecuting crimes of sexual assault and child exploitation in the DA’s office in San José.

Some of his successes include settling battles over pension reforms with unions, leading a period of economic growth that includes expansions from tech employers, and securing new routes at San Jose’s international airport. Liccardo is also tackling homelessness, leading a regional coalition to raise the minimum wage, and guiding the city to rapidly decarbonize through a community choice energy program. Liccardo’s leadership has been instrumental in revitalizing the downtown area, bringing BART to San José, securing expansions of leading tech companies, boosting funding for affordable housing, achieving important pension and fiscal reforms, preserving San José's hillsides and open spaces from development, and finding jobs for hundreds of at-risk teens.
