Sam Torrance

Sam Torrance is one of the most successful golfers in European Tour history.

Sam Torrance is one of the most popular and charismatic golfers on the professional world stage. His career has spanned over 35 years, during which he has won over 30 tournaments around the world and has walked an impressive 16,000 miles in the process!

In 2005 Torrance achieved one of the few honors he had not yet managed to in his career when he won the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit title. He had three wins and nine top five finishes during the season which was enough to secure him the top spot. Torrance has found a new lease of life on the Seniors Tour, where he finds the competition as fierce as ever and the thrill of winning just as great.

The Ryder Cup has played an enormous part in Torrance's life. He played in the great event an impressive eight times, becoming a stalwart of the team. One of the highlights of his career was sinking the winning putt for the European Team in 1985 at the Belfry, securing Europe's first victory in 28 years. It was fitting that this same venue played host to the most outstanding moment of his career, captaining the European Ryder Cup team to their memorable victory against the USA in September of 2002. His fellow team members, the worldwide media and golf fans from far and wide complimented his exemplary leadership. The famous victory put him at the center of the world's media attention and made him a household name.

His contribution to the game was recognized in 1996 when he was awarded an MBE, and this was complimented by an OBE in recognition of his excellent display of leadership in the 2002 Ryder Cup matches. In 1996 Sam was the subject of BBC Television's This Is Your Life and in late 2002 the Times newspaper declared him a "National Treasure." Torrance, along with Kelly Tilghman, provided commentary for Tiger Woods 2009 on the Xbox 360. In August 2010 Torrance released his second book, An Enduring Passion: My Ryder Cup Years.
