Sandra Marquez Stathis

Two-Time Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist; Author, "Rubble: The Search for a Haitian Boy"

Sandra Marquez Stathis is a feature writer specializing in the immigrant experience. Born in California to Colombian-born parents, she is drawn to the stories of people who navigate between two worlds. Sandra has worked as a staff writer for People magazine, the Associated Press and The Miami Herald. Her work includes a sit-down interview with Olivia Newton-John at her Malibu home following the disappearance of her longtime boyfriend at sea. She has written news features from Haiti, Cuba, Kosovo, Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Prior to that, she worked in Haiti as a human rights observer for a joint Organization of American States-United Nations mission, and as a correspondent for Reuters.

Stathis lived and worked in Haiti for four years in the 1990s, and returned in the aftermath of the deadly 7.0 quake that struck on January 12, 2010. There, she embarked on a quest in search of Junior Louis, the unforgettable boy who was seven years old and homeless when she first met him in the ‘90s. While trying to find out if he has survived the quake, she learns that Junior’s story is Haiti’s story. Her book, "Rubble," is her portrait of Haiti—its beauty and its pathos—and the story of her lifelong bond with an extraordinary young boy.
