Sara Volz
Student, MIT
Sara built a lab in her bedroom to research the use of algae to make biofuels. She used an artificial selection method to coax the algae into producing more protective (and useful) oils by adding herbicide to their water. Those strains that couldn't adapt and produce more oil, died. For her efforts, Sara won the top award of $100,000 in 2013 Intel Science Talent Search.
