Sarah Tue

Olympic Triathlete

Sarah Groff True was born in 1981 in Hanover, NH and grew up the youngest child in a family of five. She swam and ran cross country and track in high school, and swam for four years as a freestyler at Middlebury College, earning All-New England Prep honors. Torn between her love for swimming and running after her graduation, she decided to pursue both as a triathlete.

Sarah began racing in the International Triathlon Union in 2005, and shortly after in 2007, won the ITU Aquathlon World Championships and the Geneva ITU Pan American Cup. In 2008 she took the San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island title, placed second at the Huatulco ITU World Cup, and seventh at the ITU World Championships in Vancouver, finishing the year ranked No. 4 in the ITU World Cup rankings.

In 2009, she had three top-ten finishes in ITU racing and ranked 2nd among American women in the World Championship Series (and 9th overall).

Sarah suffered a fractured sacrum after a bike crash at the start of 2010. Undeterred, she went on to take 2nd place at the USA Triathlon Elite Championship, and 5th at the Open Toyota Cup finale. Showing no signs of slowing down, despite her injury, Sarah finished third at the 2011 World Championship Series race in Kitzbuhel, achieving the first-ever podium finish for a U.S. woman. A month later she placed 7th at the WCS race in London, qualifying her for the American Olympic team for the 2012 Olympics. Sarah ended the year ranked No. 3 in the overall World Championships Series standings, the highest ever ranking by an American athlete.

Sarah competed in the 2012 Olympic Games, where she finished in fourth place, the highest of any American in triathlon. Also in 2012, USA Triathlon named her as their Olympic/ITU Athlete of the Year.

Sarah won her first World Triathlon Series in Stockholm in 2014, and came in fourth at the ITU World Triathlon Series grand finale in Edmonton, Canada, securing a second place finish in the overall points standings.

In 2015, Sarah was part of the first-ever U.S. podium sweep in the ITU World Triathlon Series with her silver medal performance in Gold Coast, and shortly thereafter, finished third at the WTS in London to complete the second U.S. podium sweep. The same year, she won her second career WTS title at Stockholm, and posted a seventh-place finish at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Chicago. On August 2nd, 2015, Sarah qualified for her second U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team spot at the Rio de Janeiro ITU Olympic World Qualification Event with a fourth place finish. Sarah ended the 2015 season ranked No. 3 in the world, earning her third career ITU World Championships medal.

Sarah posted her first top-10 finish of the 2016 season in April at the World Triathlon Series race in Cape Town. She is gearing up for her showing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August of 2016.

Sarah is an Athlete Ambassor for Right to Play, an organization that uses sports and play to enhance child development in areas of disadvantage.

She has been married to her husband Ben True, a professional runner, since October 18, 2014.
