Scarlett Westbrook is a leading climate justice activist and is currently the youngest person in the world with an A level in Government and Politics, which she attained at age 13. As part of this qualification, she specialised in environment and education policy which formed a good base for the work she does today as a member of the U.K. Student Climate Network (UKSCN) - the organisation behind the school climate strikes - and as a climate activist. At UKSCN, Scarlett mainly focuses on policy, outreach and the Green New Deal, alongside organising climate strikes and actions, though she engages in a wide variety of things, most notably meeting with over 200 MPs to discuss and improve climate policy, all Westminster opposition party leaders. She is passionate about the intersections between inequality and climate change, exploring how gender and racial justice are integral to climate justice. She is also an opinion writer, with words in the Independent, i-D, the Metro, and gal-dem magazine, amongst others. In addition to this, Scarlett is the Head of Political Engagement at the ‘Teach the Future’ campaign, which has seen her contribute to a variety of climate and education policy at various stages of the legislative process, amongst much more.
Westbrook has spoken at over 200 events and was most notably a headline speaker at the International Women’s Day march in London in 2020. Furthering this, Scarlett has undertaken over 50 TV and radio interviews, in addition to around 35 print interviews and features. Additionally, she is a spokesperson for Labour for a GND.
Westbrook has been named as one of Greenpeace’s 30 under 30 activists and is the 2020 recipient of both the Women of the Future Young Star award, and the IPPR Big Ideas award. Alongside this, Scarlett is the youngest person ever to be longlisted for the Merky Books Prize.
