Scott Stevens

New Jersey Devils Legend

Scott Stevens is a former NHL defenseman who played from 1982-2004, most notably with the New Jersey Devils from 1991-2004 but also the Washington Capitals (1982-1990) and St. Louis Blues (1990-1991). A 2007 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in 2017 Stevens was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in league history.

As captain of the Devils from 1992-2004, an honor that included the distinction of him being the longest serving captain in team history, Stevens helped lead New Jersey to three Stanley Cup titles (1995, 2000, 2003) in four total appearances. The 2000 season saw the Devils go on to win their second Stanley Cup in five years, with Stevens winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP.

Stevens was a 13-time NHL All-Star (1985, 1989, 1991-1994, 1996-2001, 2003) and was named to the First All-Star team twice, in 1988 and 1994. A three-time NHL Second All-Star team selection (1992, 1997, 2000), Stevens in 1994 led the league in +/- with a career-high +53. In his 22 NHL seasons, Stevens never finished a campaign with a negative +/-.

When he retired in 2004, Stevens had played the most games as a defenseman in NHL history, a mark that was later surpassed by Hall of Famer Chris Chelios. Internationally, Stevens represented Canada in four World Championships, winning two silver medals (1985, 1989) and one bronze medal (1983). In 1991, Stevens won a gold medal at the Canada Cup while in 1996, he won a silver at the World Cup. After his playing days, Stevens worked as an NHL assistant coach.
