He made a name for himself while at Oklahoma State University by winning the PGA Tour Championship as an amateur.  He became the first amateur to accomplish this since Doug Sanders in 1956.  He also won the 1984 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 1986 NCAA individual title.

He graduated from Oklahoma State in 1986 and turned professional later that year.  While on Tour, he has four career victories and two appearances for the US Ryder Cup team.  He has also played in the Walker Cup and the Presidents Cup.
