Shafi Goldwasser
Computer Scientist & 2012 Turing Award Winner; Cofounder, Duality Technologies; Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT & UC Berkeley
Shafi Goldwasser is the Director of the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing, and the C. Lester Hogan Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley. She is also the RSA Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and a professor of computer science and applied mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
Additionally, Goldwasser is the co-founder of data analytics startup Duality Technologies, which uses cryptography, or secure codes, to help organizations share and analyze encrypted data. She serves as chief scientist at the company. She is also a scientific advisor for several technology startups, including QED-it, which specializes in blockchain.
Goldwasser was a co-recipient of ACM Turing Award for 2012 for her work in cryptography. She was also the recipient of the Gödel Prize in 1993 and another in 2001 for her work on interactive proofs and connections to approximation. She has been awarded the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, the RSA award in mathematics, the ACM Athena award for women in computer science, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science, the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award, the Barnard College Medal of Distinction, and the Suffrage Science Award. She is a member of the AAAS, ACM, NAE, NAS, Israeli Academy of Science, London Mathematical Society, and Russian Academy of Science.
Named to Forbes' "50 Over 50" list in 2023 for innovation, Goldwasser received a BS in applied mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, and MS and PhD in computer science from UC Berkeley.
