Shaun R. Harper        

Critical Race Theorist; Gender Studies Scholar

Shaun Harper studies racial, gender, and LGBT issues in corporations, law firms, Hollywood production companies, K-12 schools, and universities. He also is an expert on college sports. Dr. Harper has consulted with more than 200 businesses and institutions on strategies related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. He is author of over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. Review of Research in Education, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, The Review of Higher Education, and Teachers College Record are some journals in which his research is published. His 12 books include "Student Engagement in Higher Education" (2009, 2015), "College Men and Masculinities" (2010), "Advancing Black Male Student Success from Preschool through Ph.D." (2015), and the 5th edition of "Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession" (2011). He is editor-in-chief of the Routledge Book Series on Race and Racism in Higher Education, and has served as associate editor of Educational Researcher. He currently serves on editorial boards for the American Educational Research Journal, The Journal of Higher Education, and the Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education.

The American Educational Research Association presented Dr. Harper its 2010 Early Career Award (Division G) and 2014 Relating Research to Practice Award. He also received the 2008 Association for the Study of Higher Education Early Career Award, the 2012 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence, and the 2014 American College Personnel Association Contribution to Knowledge Award. Lumina Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation are among many funders of his research.

The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and over 400 other media outlets have quoted Dr. Harper and prominently highlighted his research. He has been interviewed on CNN, ESPN, CSPAN, NPR, and several ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC news programs across the nation.

Prior to becoming a faculty member, he was Assistant Director of MBA Admissions for the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. Dr. Harper spent a decade at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a tenured full professor. He is president of the American Educational Research Association and a past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. He teaches MBA students at the USC Marshall School of Business.

Shaun R. Harper, founder and executive director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania and president-elect of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, will deliver the keynote address for Duke University's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration on Sunday, Jan. 17.
