Sheikh Hasina Wajed

Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times from 1996 to 2001, 2009 to 2014, and 2014 to today. Sheikh Hasina is the longest serving prime minister in the history of Bangladesh.

Known for her fiery speeches and fierce ambition, Hasina has been reduced to campaigning from behind bullet-proof glass or delivering rally speeches via video link as she believes Islamic fighter groups want to assassinate her.

Prime Minister Hasina was born on September 28, 1947, in the village of Tungipara. While at the University of Dhaka in the late 1960s, she became active in politics. She served as the opposition leader from 1986 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1995.

Hasina has been recognized as one of the most powerful women in the world, ranking 26th on Forbes’ list of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2018. Hasina is also included in the US-based Foreign Policy journal’s list of 100 Global Thinkers of the present decade. In 2014, she was awarded the UNESCO Peace Tree award for her commitment to women’s empowerment and girl’s education.
