A Personal Story: How a Reporter Missed the Biggest Story of Her Life

Sheila was a successful reporter for ABC television when she met her husband, an enigmatic builder/designer who spoke four languages, raised chickens and mushrooms, and loved to travel internationally. After several years of marriage, when her husband's business was growing dramatically, Sheila began to notice strange behaviors; sleeping interruption, appetite changes, impulse control issues, and difficulty controlling his emotions. Sheila's husband asked a doctor friend for something to help him sleep and was given an antidepressant, which sent the father of a nine-year-old into psychosis. After a six-week stint in psychiatry, Sheila's husband died by suicide.

How Do We Recover From Our Greatest Losses

As a reporter, Sheila felt as if she'd missed the most important story of her life. Now, with the sole financial and emotional support for her daughter, she desperately needed her own resilience tools. Sheila began studying the work of the U.S. military and Harvard resilience experts who taught the skills for getting through the worst traumas, setbacks, and disappointments. She breaks down each of these tools with practical advice for how they impact a person's spiritual, emotional and physical development.
