Architect, Urban Designer, Sustainability Expert

Sheila Sri Prakash is an internationally acclaimed Architect, Urban Designer, and Sustainability Expert, who founded Shilpa Architects Planners Designers (SHILPA) in 1979. Sheila has a Bachelor Degree in Architecture from the Anna University School of Architecture and Planning and also attended the Executive Education Program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Her portfolio includes several critically acclaimed architectural projects in India and around the world. She is a bharathantyam dancer, musician, and a passionate patron of the Arts.

Construction Global Magazine has recently listed her amongst the 10 most influential and inspiring women in the Construction Industry. The Italian design journal – Il Giornale dell’Architettura (Journal of Architecture) has named her as one of the “100 Most Influential” people in Architecture in the World today. Architectural Digest named her to the 50 most influential names in Architecture and Design in 2015 for having “built a formidable legacy” and an “inspirational practice that designs societies and not merely buildings or cities”. The Indian Institute of Architects conferred the Honorable Architect award to her for her contributions to the field of Architecture and Design.

In July 2016, Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, The World Economic Forum (WEF) has invited her to be part of the 25-member Global Future Council on the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security. She formulated the Reciprocal Design Index, in 2013 as a member of the WEF’s Global Agenda Council for Design Innovation to establish, document and incentivize sustainable design of cities.

Shilpa Architects Planners Designers is an Architectural Design firm headquartered in India. In 2009, SHILPA acquired SGBL Studio, an international Urban Design firm, with offices in Chicago, New York and Seoul. This company has executed projects in the US, Belgium, Norway, China, Japan and Kuwait. Last year, SHILPA won a prestigious design competition for a themed urban development of 750 acres in Dubai, promoted by the Dubai Government in collaboration with an Indian Entrepreneur, when the office in Dubai, UAE was inaugurated.

The firm is acclaimed for pioneering concepts like Incremental Housing (1987), “Bunglow Apartments” (1992), Rain Water Harvesting in buildings (1993) long before it became a mandatory practice in India, Holistic Sustainability (2011) - all rooted to the fundamental concepts of Indo-centric approach to design.

The firm's portfolio spans the entire range of the real estate industry for both Public and Private Sectors. The projects range from City Planning and Improvement, Mass-transportation Infrastructure, Town Planning to Corporate Offices, Institutional Campuses, Museums, Heritage conservation, Hotels, Resorts and Spas, and other stand alone projects which have received critical acclaim.
