Sheldon Whitehouse is a Democratic senator from Rhode Island. He sits on the Budget; Environment and Public Works (EPW); Judiciary; and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committees, as well as the Special Committee on Aging. He also chairs the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism and the EPW Subcommittee on Oversight. Whitehouse was behind the "Making It in Rhode Island" initiative designed to boost manufacturing in the state and make its business sector more competitive. He is an advocate for protecting Social Security, taking action against climate change and expanding the use of information technology in health care. Before being elected to the Senate in 2006, Whitehouse served as Rhode Island's attorney general and U.S. attorney, following stints as policy advisor and counsel to the governor and as the state's director of business regulation. Whitehouse received his bachelor's degree at Yale University and J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law.
