Siddharthan Chandran

Regenerative Neurologist; Director, Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences; Director, Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic

Professor Siddharthan Chandran is Director of the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences. His work spans clinical and laboratory activity in the area of Regenerative Neurology. He is also director of the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic.

At the Centre for clinical brain sciences at the University of Edinburgh, Chandran works in the emerging discipline of regenerative neurology, exploring how injured or damaged neurons in the brain might actually be repaired. Chandran’s research strategy uses MS and motor neuron disease, also known as ALS, as primary disease models. His work combines laboratory and clinical activity to study brain injury, neurodegeneration and repair, using stem cells to model and test. His research, he says, "reflects the complexity of the brain. You can replace a kidney, but not a brain. One must remain careful and humble in the face of current knowledge."

Additionally, Professor Chandran is Director of Edinburgh Neuroscience (2016-present), Director of the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research (2009-present), Co-Director of the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic (from its inception in 2011-present) Co-Director of the MS Society Edinburgh Centre for MS Research (2015-present) and Programm Lead of the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh, Director Prof Giles Hardingham (2017-present).
