The Spazmatics were established in 1983, the result of a lost debate between physics professor Kevin Stigwood of Alta Dena High in Thousand Oaks, California, and an insistent student. The debate's outcome led to Mr. Stigwood's agreement to perform “She Blinded Me With Science” by Thomas Dolby during half-time at an upcoming state basketball championship game. In 1995, the band was further developed by Jamie Brown and Roger Sause, transforming The Spazmatics into a chain band with cast members based in a variety of cities. The band's unique reach includes Dallas, Austin, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Nashville, Tampa, Salt Lake City, Chicago, North Carolina, South Carolina, San Antonio, and New York City, with appearances in other locations such as Agoura Hills, Chicago, Las Vegas, Seattle, and Tucson.
Despite having no musical background, and keen to avoid complete humiliation, Professor Stigwood formed The Spazmatics, employing the expertise of electronics teacher Sydney Balderman (AKA “Syd Sonic”). Balderman had previously achieved acclaim in 1981 for his invention of “robot drums.” With the assurance that most of the music could be generated by computers, and that only a few talented musicians were needed to complete The Spazmatics, Stigwood was elated. To finalize the band, Stigwood brought in his special needs brother Curtis on bass, and teacher’s assistant Rusty A. Woosmeir (AKA “The Raw”) on guitar. The band is known for playing cover songs from the 1980s, and the band members wear costumes that pay tribute to the film Revenge of the Nerds, enhancing their unique stage presence.
The Spazmatics' inaugural performance stunned the initial hecklers with the group’s authenticity of production, world-class musicianship, and tight choreography. The Spazmatics' performance culminated when Stigwood engaged with a cheerleader, performing the “Belinda” dance up and down the court. Following the performance, the crowd honored the band with a standing ovation, firmly establishing the inception of The Spazmatics. With a fictional biography created by Perfect World Entertainment enhancing the band's engaging narrative, The Spazmatics continues to captivate audiences across the United States.
