Stanley Turecki

Dr. Stanley Turecki is a psychiatrist, author, and lecturer who lives and practices in New York City.

He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (certified in adult and child psychiatry), a member of several professional organizations, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and on the attending staff of Beth Israel Hospital. In 1983 he founded the Difficult Child Program at Beth Israel Medical Center and in 1985, The Difficult Child Center in Manhattan.

A respect for individual differences lies at the core of Dr. Turecki's philosophy. The resulting clinical approach is based on certain fundamental principles. Parents are not perfect; mistakes are inevitable and single missteps do not have to have dire consequences. Parents should always focus on a child's strengths to help build self-confidence, and individual styles-even if unusual-should be respected and not confused with pathology. In essence, a person doesn't have to be average in order to be normal.

In addition to being published in numerous professional journals and books, Dr. Turecki's views have been featured in popular magazines, newspapers, and on radio and television, including ABC's "20/20", "The Oprah Winfrey Show", and "Good Morning America." He frequently lectures to parents, teachers, pediatricians, nurses, and mental health professionals, and participates in the T. Berry Brazelton National Seminar Series.

Dr. Turecki's widest recognition has come as a result of the publication of his best-selling books "The Difficult Child" and "Normal Children Have Problems Too."
