Steve Hills has nearly 30 years of experience in media, holding wide-ranging roles including reporter, sales representative and executive. He was named president and general manager of The Washington Post in September 2002, and in February 2008 became president and general manager of Washington Post Media, a world-class, multiplatform news brand that has the highest combined market penetration in print and online of any Top 10 metropolitan newspaper.

Since joining The Post, Steve has led innovations that include the development of a highly successful new business unit, the creation of an industry-leading niche publishing division, the PostPoints loyalty program, Washington Post Radio, FW Magazine, and many other print and digital products.

Steve joined The Post as an advertising sales representative in 1987 after working as a business intern in 1986. He served in a series of increasingly responsible positions in advertising and marketing before becoming vice president of advertising in 1993. In January 2001, he was appointed vice president of sales and marketing, overseeing the circulation, advertising and marketing departments. He also oversees Greater Washington Publishing, a niche publishing operation.

Before joining The Post, Steve covered sports for the San Mateo Times in 1981. In 1982, he and a partner created and launched the Bay City Business Journal, a regional business publication. Previously, he was director of sales and marketing at ITB Inc. in Emeryville, Calif., and was a sales representative for the Fuller Brush Co. in San Francisco.

Steve graduated from Yale University in 1981 and received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1987.

Steve serves as a director of Classified Ventures, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Newspaper Association of America and the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, and previously served on the board of the Advertising Council and Conceptis Technologies, an Internet-based medical education company.

Steve served on the boards of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and the National Child Research Center, both in Washington, D.C.

He and his wife, Joslyn, live in Chevy Chase, Md., with their two children.
