Steven Schaerer

Author of "Surviving Chinese Communist Detention" & China Policy Expert

Steven Schaerer survived communist Chinese incarceration, torture, and deportation. He is the author of "Surviving Chinese Communist Detention" and is an expert speaker and writer on Chinese culture, policy, and geopolitics.

After graduating from the California’s CSU system in 2011, Schaerer took a job in Beijing, China, where he spent the next 5 years of his life. He dedicated years to the pursuit of learning Mandarin, building a life in East Asia, and co-founding a successful consulting firm in his mid-20’s.

Out of the blue, CCP authorities raided his office where he and colleagues from Germany and Spain were falsely accused of “illegal employment” in China. Schaerer and his colleagues were forced to sign and fingerprint documents “confessing” their crimes and thrown into a black-site Chinese prison cell that same day.

Upon arrival, Schaerer was separated from his co-workers and thrown into a crowded prison cell where he was locked up 24 hours a day, shared a single squatter-toilet with 16 inmates, slept on blood-stained blankets, ate out of a communal trough, was sleep-deprived, and almost died on several occasions. His cell walls were plastered with “suicide” warnings.

Luckily, the U.S. government got involved, petitioning for his safe release. He was ultimately deported back to the United States receiving a re-entry travel ban to China by CCP immigration authorities.

Schaerer is a proud first-generation American who hails from California’s Bay Area, and the bi-racial son of immigrant parents from Switzerland and Mexico. He was the first person in his family to attend college, earning a degree in chemistry from Sonoma State University in Northern California. In addition to English, Schaerer speaks Mandarin and Spanish. He is a staunch advocate for and defender of freedom, liberty, the Constitution, free-market capitalism, Human Rights and the American way of life.
