Stuart Cowan    

Chief Scientist, Smart Cities Council and Partner, Autopoiesis LLC

Stuart Cowan serves as the Chief Scientist for the Smart Cities Council, where he helps cities around the world become more livable, workable, and sustainable through the application of smart technologies.

He co-founded Autopoiesis LLC, which offers ecological design, integrated modeling, feasibility analysis and sustainable financial services for large-scale green development projects.

Cowan served as a Transaction Manager and founding team member of Portland Family of Funds, an innovative sustainable community investment fund.

Previously, He served as Conservation Economy Research Director at Ecotrust, where he led the development of the Reliable Prosperity framework for bioregional planning.

He is the co-author of Ecological Design, which provides a visionary approach to integrating ecology and planning, architecture, and product design.

Cowan received his doctorate in complex systems from U.C. Berkeley with a focus on ecological economics.
