Stuart M. Altschuler  

Stuart Altschuler is a partner in Winston & Strawn?s litigation department who concentrates in appellate litigation and complex cases for corporate clients.

Mr. Altschuler has handled matters in the areas of antitrust, securities and financial regulation, commercial law, product liability, intellectual property, insurance, employment, and environmental law, and has experience in class action and multi-district litigation, administrative proceedings, internal investigations, and corporate compliance programs.

He is a member of the Winston & Strawn team defending Philip Morris USA in class actions and other complex litigation brought by health care insurers and other corporate plaintiffs seeking recovery for alleged tobacco-related expenses. He also chaired the joint defense group of appellate counsel that briefed the successful appeal from the largest judgment in history — the $145 billion class-action award against the tobacco industry in Liggett v. Engle (Fla. 3d DCA May 21, 2003).  He also defended Allstate Insurance Co. in federal class actions filed by 19 state attorneys general alleging a “global” price-fixing conspiracy among commercial liability insurers in the United States and Europe.

In addition, Mr. Altschuler has represented a wide variety of clients in antitrust matters, SEC investigations and enforcement actions, proxy litigation, white-collar criminal investigations, ERISA suits, and general commercial litigation.  He represented the former president of Continental Illinois National Bank in securities class actions, shareholder derivative litigation, and FDIC suits arising from the bank’s near-collapse in the 1980s.
