Suman Bery is chief economist at Shell International, based in The Hague. He served for 10 years in New Delhi as director-general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, one of India’s leading independent policy research institutions. He then served as Country Director, India Central, International Growth Centre, and was responsible for setting up the New Delhi office in partnership with the Indian Statistical Institute. In the early 1990s, while on leave from a position at the World Bank, he worked as special consultant to the Reserve Bank of India, Bombay, advising the governor and deputy governors on financial sector policy, institutional reform, and market development and regulation.
