Nurse Practictioner, National Expert and Speaker on Alzheimer's Disease, Other Dementias & Memory Wellness

2010 is Susan Scanland's 28th year as a nurse practitioner working with Alzheimer's disease and dementia clients. She has practiced in long-term care, home care, and outpatient clinics. She currently serves as a dementia and Alzheimer's consultant at a Scranton PA long-term care facility. She is a national speaker on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Susan founded GeriScan in 1999. This national consulting firm, winner of two regional business awards, focused on dementia education for health care providers. Ten years later, GeriScan was incorporated and rebranded as Dementia ConnectionTM, with increased caregiver and web-based information.

An MSN graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Susan served on faculty in the gerontological and family nurse practitioner graduate programs at Binghamton University (SUNY) from 1999-2003. She taught and directed the geriatric curriculum at the Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency in Kingston, PA from 1987-1999. Susan practiced in a Veterans Administration nursing home from 1982-1987. She presented seminars internationally for the CV Mosby publishing company during the 1990s and served as a Bureau for Aging Consultant in Luzerne County (PA) in 1987.

Susan has provided over 500 Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other age-related topics in 40 states. She published a textbook chapter and articles in professional journals and on-line courses. Susan has presented at many national conferences, including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Society on Aging, the American Council on Aging and the Assisted Living Federation of America.

Susan Scanland has served on Speakers' Bureaus or as an advisor for all four anti-dementia medication pharmaceutical corporations. Susan is a member of the National Speakers' Association; currently applying for the prestigious CSP (Certified Speaking Professional) designation.

Susan publishes and circulates a monthly e-newsletter to nearly 10,000 health care providers on Alzheimer's disease, other dementias and depression in elders. Susan offers free monthly webinars, with signup available on her website. She is available to speak on a variety of topics, including Alzheimer's disease prevention, memory issues, dementia and lifestyle, caregiver challenges and medical, as well as family management of Alzheimer's and other dementias.
