Susan W. Butterworth  

Founder of Health Management Services; Associate Professor with the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University

Dr. Butterworth is the principal of Q-consult, LLC and has been involved in the health promotion and chronic disease self-management field since the word “wellness” was coined. She received her doctoral degree in adult education and training with a cognate in health promotion from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her special area of expertise is the practical application of behavior change science, such as Motivational Interviewing-based health coaching and other patient engagement strategies, to various health care settings. She has been awarded multiple NIH, HRSA and other grants to study the efficacy and impact of health management interventions and is well-published on the theory and outcomes of behavior change science.

Dr. Butterworth was an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University for nearly 20 years. While there, she taught at both the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and founded Health Management Services, which was awarded Best Wellness Vendor by Health Industries Research Companies in 2007, 2008 and 2009. She is an active member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and oversees workforce initiatives for healthcare organizations who wish to implement an evidence-based
patient-centered approach.
