Taj Burrow

Australian Retired Pro Surfer Known for His Aerial Tricks & Freesurf Films

Taj Burrow is an Australian retired pro surfer and one of Australia's surf legends. He is considered by many to be the "greatest surfer to never win a world title."

Burrow's surfing style is known for being innovative and using lots of aerial tricks, and he was at the forefront of the aerial movement in the late 1990s. Burrow is also known for his freesurf films such as 2000's Sabotaj, 2002's Montaj, and 2005's Taj Burrow's Fair Bits. Notably, Burrow was the first to incorporate helicopter footage into his freesurf videos. These freestyle films helped make freestyle surfing more of a lucrative and viable career path for later generations of surfers.

Burrow began surfing when he was just seven years old and he quickly advanced his skills on the board. Within just a few years, Burrow was winning competitions and earning recognition as a future star.

In 1998, Burrow went professional and has since been recognized as one of the world's best surfers. He is now a member of the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. After his first year on tour in 1998, Burrow won the ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year Award after finishing 12th in the overall rankings.

In 2007, Burrow won the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia. He backed this up with a victory at the 2007 Billabong Pro in Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, where he claimed the title over the then 8-time world champion, Kelly Slater.

In 2009, Burrow defeated Slater once more in the final of the Billabong Pipeline Masters at the Banzai Pipeline. That same year Burrow finished in fourth place on the World Tour. Burrow won the 2013 Hurley Pro event in September 2013 for the first time, beating fellow Australian Julian Wilson.

Since 2005, Burrow has hosted the "Taj Small Fries" junior surfing competition in his hometown of Yallingup, Australia.

In 2016, Burrow made the decision to stop surfing professionally.
