Venture Partner at Sequoia Capital, Young Global Leader at WEF, Kauffman Fellow

Tan Yinglan joined Sequoia Capital in 2012 and is part of Indian team as a Venture Partner based out of Singapore where he set up the Singapore office and manage investments for Sequoia Capital. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital, Tan Yinglan was the Head (Projects), National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office (Singapore) where he was in the Singapore Administrative Service. In his role, he oversaw the National Framework for Innovation and Enterprise, where he oversees investments in high-growth ventures and venture funds.

Tan Yinglan had previously been the first Director of 3i Venturelab China, a joint-venture between private equity firm 3i (LSE:III) and INSEAD. He had also been the Senior Assistant Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), where he was the deskhead for Economic Development Board Investments portfolio. Yinglan was also the Special Assistant to the Chief Economic Advisor to the World Bank, as a Milton and Cynthia Friedman Fellow. During graduate school at Stanford, he had co-founded, raised angel funding and sold an online dating startup (which is still featured as a case study in Stanford).

Yinglan is also a faculty member at INSEAD where he developed and teaches an elective MBA-course. Yinglan is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University and has also taught modules on Entrepreneurial Finance / Management at Singapore Management University and for the Advanced Management Program.

Yinglan was honoured as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2012 and also serves as a Global Agenda Council Member on Fostering Entrepreneurship for the 2011-2014 term. A Kauffman Fellow, Yinglan has been named as one of 100 Leaders Of Tomorrow by the St Gallen Symposium in 2010, and a Young Global Leader at the Symposium for Leaders of the Next Generation (Penglai, China) in 2011, Outstanding Youth of China Synergy Program (2005, mentor 2007) and Dragon100 Young Chinese Leader (2006).

Specialties:A Public Service Commission (PSC) Overseas Merit Scholarship, Yinglan graduated with University and College Honours from Carnegie Mellon University with dual bachelor degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Economics. At graduation, Yinglan was awarded the William L. Everitt Student Excellence Award for being a distinguished graduate. A Certified Risk Analyst, he also earned a MSc of Mgmt Sci and Engineering from Stanford University. Yinglan attended Harvard as a JFK Fellow.
