Bethany: We met through our fathers-both of whom were in the financial planning industry--in 1994. At the time, Scott was coming off of a broken engagement and I was dating someone else. But our vibrant personalities, shared values, and passion for life led to a strong friendship. In fact, I thought Scott was so great I set him up with a good friend of mine!

Later, Scott moved to California to work for my dad. Buy then I had broken up with my boyfriend and Scott was still single. Soon, our friendship grew into love. We were married in 1998, then moved to Colorado to lead and manage Envoy Financial.

Scott: We had such a good time planning our wedding together (that's right, together) that on a whim Bethany put together an idea to write a book about it. We submitted our book idea to two book publishers. Cook Communications called us in. As we sat there pitching our wedding planning book, the woman meeting with us said, "Aren't you both financial advisors?" "Yes," we replied?

"Then why don't you write a book about finances?"

The last thing we wanted was to put out one more boring book about money management, but during that conversation, we realized that we could take the no-nonsense, relationship-based communication style we'd wanted to write about in our wedding book and apply it to finances. That conversation became our first book, Cents and Sensibility: How Couples Can Agree About Money.

Hundreds of radio and TV interviews later, we had discovered the need for a realist voice that could truly help couples get to the root of their financial problems. We set out on a mission to strengthen personal financial communication as The Money Couple.

Bethany: People always ask us what it's like to work together. The answer? We love it. We laugh a lot and look at our speaking, writing, and consulting as an opportunity to touch lives and change relationships. Of course we have intense conversations now and then, but we think a lot a like and really enjoy working together.

Really, neither of us can imagine working with anyone else. We both grew up thinking we were stupid-turns out we're both dyslexic!-so we understand each other on a very deep level. We have two sons, Cade and Cole, who bring us so much joy and inspiration as we work, play, and build a family together.

The last year of our lives has been a true rollercoaster of emotions-from working on our latest book, First Comes Love, Then Comes Money, to battling my diagnosis of Stage three breast cancer-I am now cancer-free! The support and encouragement we give each other in the good times and the hard times makes working together on something we believe in an incredible experience. We base our lives on this verse from the Bible: "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7). We see life as an adventure and we love helping others discover that joy as well. It is our hope that by teaching healthy financial communication, we can show others how to have the kind of life they've always dreamed of.
