Tie Domi

Former NHL Player

Popularly known as one of the feistiest players in professional hockey, Tie Domi's NHL career spanned over three professional teams and 1020 games. Drafted into the NHL in 1988 to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Domi has also played for the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets.

At the age of 15, Domi played Junior C hockey for his hometown of Belle River, Ontario. For the 1986-1987 season, he joined the Peterborough Petes, where he helped to capture the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Domi was selected 27th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the 89-90 season, he was traded to the New York Rangers, where he remained until the 92-93 season.

During the 92-93 season, Domi was traded to the Winnipeg Jets where he scored 15 points and tallied 344 penalty minutes. In 93-94, he played 81 games, scored 19 points and racked-up a league-high 347 penalty minutes. Traded back to the Leafs in 92-93, Domi proved to be an invaluable asset to his team for the next eleven seasons – he continued to be a fan favourite as he improved offensively, and failed to stop picking fights on the ice.

Domi announced his retirement from hockey on September 19th, 2006. He has more penalty minutes than any other player in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs and third overall in penalty minutes in NHL history. Despite Domi’s reputation for his fiery temper and lover of fighting, he is a major contributor to a number of charities such as, Santa on Wheels, Variety Village and Rose Cherry’s Home. Paired with figure skater Christine Hough-Sweeney, Domi was a competitor in the CBC’s Battle of the Blades for the Diabetes Hope Foundation.
