Sir Tim Smit KBE is the Chief Executive and Co-founder of the Eden Project, located near St Austell in Cornwall. Since its inception as a concept in 1995 and its opening to the public in 2000, the Eden Project has transformed a once sterile pit into a vibrant cradle of life, showcasing world-class horticulture and striking architecture that symbolize human endeavor. The project has injected over £1.9 billion into the Cornish economy and has been instrumental in changing public perceptions of science through art, drama, and storytelling. Smit's leadership continues to emphasize the project's commitment to local regeneration and sustainable, forward-thinking business practices.
In his various roles, Smit has served as a trustee, patron, and board member of numerous organizations at both local and national levels. His achievements have been recognized with several honors, including the Royal Society of Arts Albert Medal in 2003, an Honorary CBE in 2002, and a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in June 2012. Additionally, he has received honorary doctorates and fellowships from multiple universities. An active participant in media, Smit has appeared on television and radio programs like ‘This is Your Life’ and ‘Desert Island Discs’, and is a frequent speaker at events ranging from conferences to award ceremonies.
Smit is also the Executive Chairman of Eden Project International, which ambitiously aims to establish a presence on every inhabited continent by 2025. He has authored impactful books on "The Lost Gardens of Heligan" and the Eden Project, contributing to publications on a variety of topics. Smit resides in Cornwall, where he enjoys reading, film, music, and art in his leisure time. His commitment to leadership, sustainability, and making a difference continues to inspire audiences globally.
