Chairman, Motion Picture Group, Sony Pictures Entertainment

Thomas E. Rothman is Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group. In that role, Rothman oversees all of the studio’s motion picture production and distribution activities worldwide.

Rothman joined Sony Pictures in late 2013 as Chairman of TriStar Productions.

Previously, Rothman served as Chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment, part of Fox Entertainment Group Inc., a subsidiary of News Corp., from 2000 to 2005 and as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 2005 to 2013. During his time at Fox, he oversaw all of the studio’s filmmaking operations and, starting in 2009, Twentieth Century Fox Television. Many of those years set profit records for Fox, and Rothman’s track record includes the two highest grossing films in cinematic history, Titanic and Avatar; over $40 billion in worldwide box office; and, more than 150 Academy Award® nominations.

From 1995 to 2000, he held various positions of increasing responsibility at Fox. In 1994, Rothman founded and served as President of Fox Searchlight Pictures. Prior to that, he served as President of Worldwide Production for the Samuel Goldwyn Company from 1989 to 1994, and Executive Vice President of Columbia Pictures from 1987 to 1989. Rothman was an associate and then partner with the law firm of Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz from 1982 to 1987.

Rothman is a member of the Board of Directors of the Sundance Institute and the American Film Institute (emeritus). He also serves on the Board of Brown University (emeritus), California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and the Priceline Group. He has been appointed by President Obama to the National Council of the Arts.
