Cyber Division deputy Assistant Director at FBI

Tonya Ugoretz is a career FBI Intelligence Analyst and Certified Intelligence Officer. She is with the National Intelligence Council as the Senior Advisor for Transnational Organized Crime in the Office of Transnational Threats.

Ugoretz joined the government in 2001 as a Presidential Management Fellow. She was an all-source analyst with the FBI’s Counterterrorism program from 2001 to 2006. In 2003, she became the first analyst to serve as the FBI Director’s daily intelligence briefer. From 2008 to 2012, first as a Unit Chief and then as a Section Chief in the Senior Executive Service, she oversaw daily intelligence briefings for the FBI Director and the Attorney General, as well as FBI analysts’ contributions to senior-level Intelligence Community products such as the President’s Daily Brief. As the Chief Intelligence Officer from 2010 to 2012, Ugoretz led the Bureau’s team of Senior National Intelligence Officers and represented the FBI in multiagency fora such as the National Intelligence Board. In addition to her current role, Ugoretz has served in other joint-duty assignments with the CIA’s CounterTerrorism Center (2006–2008) and with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the El Paso Intelligence Center (2012–2014).

In 2006 and 2007, she was a Subject Matter Expert on the multiagency High Value Detainee Prosecution Task Force. Ugoretz is an Adjunct Associate Professor with Georgetown University’s Center for Security Studies, where she co-created and teaches a course on Domestic Intelligence. She has served as Adjunct Faculty of the Center for Intelligence Training, FBI Academy, Quantico, VA; and as an elected member of the FBI’s Intelligence Analyst Advisory Board. She has received the Director’s Award for Exceptionally Meritorious Service from the National Counterterrorism Center and an Exceptional Performance Award from the CIA. Ms. Ugoretz is from South Jersey.

She received a B.A. in International Relations and in Spanish (Hons.) from Ursinus College and an M.A. in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University. Prior to her government service, she was an editor of foreign policy journals. She received the Rising Star Alumni Award from Ursinus College; and the Award for Graduate Academic Excellence, Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service, and Alumni Service Award from Seton Hall.
