Tulsi Gabbard

U.S. Congresswoman for Hawaii; 2020 Presidential Candidate

Tulsi Gabbard is a U.S. congresswoman representing Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District. She is one of the first two female combat veterans, the first Samoan-American, and the first Hindu ever to serve as a member of Congress. She is also the first female combat veteran and first Samoan-American to ever run for the presidency.

Gabbard has served for over six years on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Committee where she's been intimately involved with sensitive, national security issues.

A war veteran of two tours of duty in the Middle East, and presently a major in the US Army National Guard, Gabbard is an outspoken critic of regime change wars, and the new cold war.

Gabbard previously served in the Honolulu City Council. Before that, she was the youngest person ever elected to the Hawaii State Legislature. A year after her 2002 election, Gabbard joined the Hawaii National Guard. In 2004, she deployed to Iraq, serving two tours of combat duty in the Middle East.

Gabbard was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during Operation Iraqi Freedom, was the first female Distinguished Honor Graduate at Fort McClellan's Officer Candidate School and was the first woman ever to receive an award of appreciation from the Kuwaiti military on her second overseas tour.

Between her two tours, Gabbard was a legislative aide to U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, advising him on energy independence, homeland security, the environment and veterans' affairs. Gabbard continues to serve as a major in the Hawaii National Guard.
