Tyler Allen

Cancer Researcher & Ph.D. candidate at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine

Tyler A. Allen is a National Cancer Institute fellow and PhD candidate in Comparative Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina State University. He studies how cancer and stem cells travel through the circulation and exit blood vessels.

Allen served as the President of the Graduate Student Association at NCSU for the 2016-17 term, and was reelected for the 2017-18 term.

He is on a mission to understand how cancer works. In 2018, Allen was named to Forbes' "30 Under 30" list for his groundbreaking research on how tumor cells exit the bloodstream to form new tumors, a theory called "cancer exodus hypothesis." The impact of this research could affect how early doctors can detect when cancer spreads throughout the body.

Throughout his graduate-school career, Allen, a Ph.D. candidate in comparative biomedical sciences, has perfected presentations about complex research and even shared some of his insights in surprisingly easy-to-follow videos on YouTube.

Allen earned dual B.S. degrees from North Carolina State University in Molecular Biology / Cellular Biology , and Plant Biology , in 2014.

In 2014, Allen began his PhD studies in Biomedical Sciences at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine.
