Tyler Perry

Actor, Writer, Producer, Director & CEO, Tyler Perry Studios; Philanthropist & Founder, Perry Foundation

Tyler Perry is a well-established filmmaker, playwright, actor, and philanthropist who has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. Perry had a difficult childhood but found solace and healing through writing. Encouraged by Oprah Winfrey's advice to keep a journal, Perry began writing plays exploring themes of faith, family, and resilience. He initially faced financial struggles and even homelessness while pursuing his dream of bringing his work to audiences, but his persistence eventually led to success.

In 1998, Perry's play "I Know I’ve Been Changed" marked the beginning of his rise to fame. His character, Mabel "Madea" Simmons, a strong, wise, and humorous matriarch played by Perry himself, became an icon, attracting a dedicated fan base. Perry's unique blend of comedy and heartfelt lessons about faith and family resonated with audiences, particularly within the African American community. His stage success paved the way to Hollywood, where he created a series of films featuring Madea, starting with "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" in 2005, which was adapted from his stage play and grossed over $50 million. This was followed by "Madea’s Family Reunion" in 2006, which debuted at number one at the box office and grossed $65 million, solidifying Perry as a significant box office draw.

Perry diversified his creative portfolio by venturing into television, developing series like "House of Payne" and "The Haves and the Have Nots," which achieved high ratings and brought diverse representation to mainstream audiences. In 2011, Forbes listed him as the highest-paid man in entertainment, earning $130 million between May 2010 and May 2011. In 2012, Perry formed an exclusive multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey and her network OWN, launching scripted projects like "The Haves and the Have Nots." He co-produced the film "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" alongside Winfrey and Lee Daniels. His work significantly boosted OWN's ratings, demonstrating his influential presence in the television industry.

In 2019, Perry opened Tyler Perry Studios, a 330-acre production studio in Atlanta, Georgia, marking a groundbreaking achievement as the first African American to own a major studio outright. This studio has served as the location for numerous productions, including "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and the blockbuster "Black Panther." Additionally, Perry's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy Awards in 2021 and the Governor's Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2020. He was also included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in 2020.

Outside of his work in film and television, Perry is a committed philanthropist. Through the Perry Foundation, he supports causes related to homelessness, education, and social justice. Perry's journey from hardship to Hollywood is a testament to his resilience, creativity, and dedication to uplifting others. Moving forward, Perry continues to influence the entertainment industry with projects such as the Netflix film "Mea Culpa," the Prime Video film "Divorce In The Black," and a four-picture pact with Amazon Studios, which includes "Black, White & Blue."
