Head, Kadima; Leader of the Opposition, Israel

Tzipi Livni is leader of Israel’s opposition and chairman of the Kadima party, which she helped found in 2005. Prior to Kadima, she was a member of the Likud party. With the establishment of the Netanyahu government in April 2009, Livni became head of the opposition. She served as minister of justice, a position she held after her appointment, in 2006, as vice prime minister and minister of foreign affairs in the 31st government of Israel. In the 30th government, established in 2003, she held four portfolios. In 2001, Livni was appointed minister of regional cooperation and agriculture in the 29th government. Livni was first elected to the Knesset in 1999 and served as a member of the Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee and the Committee on the Status of Women, and as chairperson of the subcommittee responsible for legislation of the Prevention of Money Laundering Law.
