Executive Vice-President of the European Commission & European Commissioner for Trade; Former Prime Minister of Latvia

Valdis Dombrovskis is the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for An Economy that Works for People and the European Commissioner for Trade. Being the Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Euro and Social Dialogue, he is also in charge of Financial Stability, Financial Services, and the Capital Markets Union. His responsibilities include supervising the economic and fiscal policy coordination in the European Union and further strengthening Europe's Economic and Monetary Union. As the EU finance chief, he was involved in managing the 2015 Greek crisis and was responsible for Macro-Financial Assistance programs to Ukraine. Since 2021, he has served as the Co-chair of the Trade and Technology Council. As a supporter of the University of Latvia Foundation, he donated 1,500 euros to Valdis Dombrovskis Excellence Scholarships.

Prior to his current role, he served three consecutive terms as the Prime Minister of Latvia, becoming the longest-serving elected head of government in Latvia’s history. He resigned from the position following a tragic incident in 2013. Dombrovskis also served as Latvia’s Minister of Finance from 2002 to 2004 and was a Member of the European Parliament for two terms, 2004-2009 and 2014-present. He served as a Member of the Saeima (Parliament) of Latvia (March 2004 - June 2004; January 2014 - June 2014) and was Latvia’s Minister of Finance from 2002 to 2004. He is affiliated with the New Era Party and the Unity political party.

Dombrovskis graduated with a degree in physics from the University of Latvia (1993) and economics from Riga University of Technology (1995). He received his master’s degree in physics in 1995 from the University of Latvia. From 1995 -1998, he worked as a laboratory assistant and a Ph.D. student at various institutions, including Mainz University, Germany, the Institute of Solid-State Physics in Latvia, and at the University of Maryland (USA). Prior to joining politics, he worked as a senior economist and Chief Economist at the Bank of Latvia. Together with Anders Aslund, he co-authored the book "How Latvia Came Through the Financial Crisis”, which was published in 2011. In November 2014, Valdis Dombrovskis was awarded the Order of the Three Stars (Triju Zvaigžņu ordenis), the highest State Decoration of the Republic of Latvia.
