Van Lathan became a household name as a television journalist and host and producer on TMZ.

After a political disagreement with a colleague, Lathan Jr. was fired from TMZ in October of 2019.

Since then, Lathan Jr. has begun co-hosting two podcasts, and produced the short sci-fi film, "Two Distant Strangers," winning an Oscar in the process.

On his "Higher Learning" podcast, Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay dissect the biggest topics in Black culture, politics, and sports. Two times per week, they wade into the most important and timely conversations, frequently inviting guests on the podcast and occasionally debating each other.
