Founder, Berjaya Corporation Group of Companies, Malaysia

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan (“TSVT”), aged 63, founder of the Berjaya Corporation group of companies started his business from humble beginnings and through his entrepreneurial skills and leadership, transformed it into a diversified Malaysian conglomerate listed on Bursa Malaysia, the local stock exchange. He is a pioneer in many innovative business sectors in Malaysia. Today, the Berjaya Corporation group of companies and TSVT’s other private businesses employ more than 30,000 employees and has a combined revenue exceeding RM32 billion worldwide.

TSVT’s diverse businesses include consumer marketing & direct selling, financial services, property investment & development, hotels & resorts and recreation development, gaming & lottery management, food & beverage, development of sanitary landfill, environmental services & clean technology and motor distribution & assembly, internet-related businesses, water utilities, media, retail, telecommunications and football club.

More than just being a successful businessman, TSVT is also a notable philanthropist. Through his personal foundation, Better Malaysia Foundation, and Berjaya Cares Foundation under the Berjaya Corporation group of companies, he has been involved in a wide range of Corporate Social Responsibility activities over the years, such as supporting medical and health-related causes including the setting up of a free acupuncture treatment centre, promoting literacy programmes and education for the poor, programmes to provide support for single mothers, sponsoring feeding programmes for the poor, supporting Malaysian performing arts and culture and providing aid for crisis relief within Malaysia and abroad.

TSVT particularly believes in the importance of the English Language and is working with a non-governmental organization to set up education centres across Malaysia to teach English and other living skills among disadvantaged youths in Malaysia.

TSVT has been conferred many Awards. Some of the notable ones are the Property Man of the Year Award by the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) (2004), the ASEAN Businessmen Award by the Hanoi Business Association in Vietnam (2007), the BrandLaureate Personality Award (2009) and the BrandLaureate Sports Branding Man of the Year Award (2013) by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce (2011), the Lifetime Achievement Award on Leadership in National Philanthropy by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) (2011), and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Hospitality Developer of the Year 2013-15 (2014) by the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards.

In July 2013, TSVT received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Wales, United Kingdom in recognition of his outstanding contribution to international business and sport.
