Born in Milan on 19th May 1957. Holds a degree in Discipline Economiche e Sociali from "Luigi Bocconi" University (Mi) and a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Rochester.NY. Since May 2005, Director General of the Treasury - Ministry of Economy and Finance of Italy. Since December 2005, President of the Fondazione Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). From July 2002 to May 2005, Ragioniere Generale dello Stato - Ministry of Economy and Finance of Italy. From 2001 to 2002, Managing Director at Credit Suisse First Boston, London. From 1994 to 2000, Head of the Department of Economics and Financial Analysis and Privatizations at the Italian Ministry of the Treasury, Budget and Financial Programming. From 1990 to 1994, "Woolwich Professor of Financial Economics", University of London, Birkbeck College, UK. From 1986 to 1990, Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, Yale University - USA.

Furthermore, currently he is: Chairman of the FSC (Financial Services Committeee) - of European Council Vice - Chairman of EFC - Economic and Financial Committee - of European Commission Member of The Board of the EFSF - European Financial Stability Facility Member of Aspen Institute Italia AWARDS 2010 the Guido Carli Prize "for the best financial enterprise – SME fund". 2005 the "Bocconiano dell’Anno" Prize. 2004 the Ezio Tarantelli Prize "for the best economic idea". He is the author of several articles and books.
