I am a Yemeni journalist, software developer and media and communication researcher. I currently work as the director of the Global Journalism master programme at Örebro University, where I also do part-time research on Internet censorship and work on Internet projects to empower activists involved the Arab Spring. Among my projects is Alkasir for Internet Censorship Mapping and Circumvention, which is used by users in many countries including Syria and Iran to access blocked websites. My role in supporting democracy through technology won me a TEDGlobal 2010 fellowship, a TED 2012 senior fellowships along with Örebro University's 2010 Democracy Award.

I welcome and encourage initiatives in the Middle East and beyond and am eager to support activists to promote freedom of expression and human rights.
