William Gay is an assistant defensive backs coach for the Washington Commanders and a former NFL cornerback best known for his successful tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gay developed a passion for football early, playing at the University of Louisville, where he earned recognition as a standout defensive player. His impressive college career led to his selection by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Gay quickly became a key contributor to the Steelers’ defense, known for his strong coverage skills and playmaking ability.

Over the course of his career, Gay played primarily for the Steelers from 2007 to 2013, with a brief return to the team in 2015 and 2016. During his time with Pittsburgh, he played a vital role in their Super Bowl XLIII victory and became known for his consistency in the secondary. Gay amassed over 400 tackles and 14 interceptions in his career, establishing himself as a reliable and experienced defensive presence. His leadership and toughness on the field earned him the respect of teammates and coaches, making him a fan favorite in Pittsburgh.

Beyond his football achievements, Gay is recognized for his activism and advocacy. He became a prominent voice for social justice causes. He advocated for Domestic Violence awareness. A subject very near and dear to his heart because of the loss of his mother, Mrs. Carolyn Bryant. Today he speaks to domestic violence shelters to help carry on his mother’s legacy.
