William Schmidt is University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and codirector of its Education Policy Center, U.S.-China Center for Research, and a National Science Foundation project on Promoting Rigorous Outcomes in Mathematics and Science Education. He also holds faculty appointments in the Departments of Educational Psychology and Statistics. Previously, he served as national research coordinator and executive director of the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics, overseeing U.S. participation in the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement-sponsored Third International Mathematics and Science Study. His current research focuses on academic content in K-12 schooling, assessment theory, the effects of curriculum on academic achievement, and educational policy related to mathematics, science, and testing in general. He is the co-author of seven books, including Why Schools Matter: A Cross-National Comparison of Curriculum and Learning.
