Witold Rybczynski is the Martin and Margy Meyerson professor of urbanism and a professor of real estate at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His latest book is Makeshift Metropolis: Ideas about Cities. He is the architecture critic for Slate and is the author of the critically acclaimed book Homeand the award-winning A Clearing in the Distance. He has written about architecture for The New York Times, The Atlantic, TIME, and The New Yorker. Rybczynski won the National Building Museum’s 2007 Vincent Scully Prize and is a member of the US Commission of Fine Arts. He designs private houses and has conducted research in minimum-cost housing for developing countries. In addition to several other titles, which span the subjects of architecture, technology, and the history of the ordinary screw, Rybczynski also wrote My Two Polish Grandfathers: And Other Essays on the Imaginative Life.
