Wonho Chung

Comedian, actor, and singer; has been deemed as the first Arabic stand up comedian

Wonho Chung was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on October 22, 1981, into a musical and rather different family. His father is a prominent physiotherapist from South Korea and his mother is from Vietnam. Although he grew up in an Asian household, Chungs upbringing was completely Arab, having been brought up in Amman, Jordan. He graduated from the Applied Science University in 2004, and then moved to Dubai during the same year to pursue a career in media.

Chungs comedy career began in November 2007 when Showtime Arabia approached him to join the Axis of Evil comedy tour as the Korean they were looking for. They originally wanted a North Korean to complete the Axis, but instead settled for a South Korean, who speaks Arabic. He toured with the Axis of Evil comedy tour for a month, performing in 27 shows infront of 20,000 people collectively, in Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon and Dubai. Chungs first TV appearance was in ShowComedys follow-up mini-series to the Axis of Evil comedy tour in the Middle East, a nine episode reality documentary aptly dubbed 3 guys and Wonho, which won a golden trophy at the 2008 Promax BDA awards ceremony held in Dubai.

Stand up comedy lovers were treated to another dosage of comedy when Showtime put together Friday Night Live, which Chung hosted alongside his Axis co-star, Aron Kader. Friday Night Live was then the regions biggest stand up comedy show, with nine international comedians sharing the stage and pulling in an audience of 2,500 people for a one night stand up comedy extravaganza, under the theme minorities rule.

Chung also starred alongside international comedians; Sugar Sammy, Ronnie Khalil and Ron Josol in Showtimes third foray into stand-up comedy when Friday Night Live New World Order (Friday Night Live 2) took place at the Dubai Community Theatre at Mall of the Emirates. The show was well received by the audience and the subsequent eponymous TV special was a hit among audiences across Arab countries.

Chung has been garnering extensive media coverage for possibly being the first Arabic stand up comedian. He was interviewed by CNN, NPR, MBC, Al Arabiyya, Future TV, Rotana, Al Hurra TV to name but a few. As well as many radio shows, magazines and newspapers.

Chung often includes singing into his act, as he is a trained vocalist having received various certificates from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in vocal studies. Though not by any means typecast, Chung was also a professional table tennis player achieving a top eight ranking in the mens division nationwide in Jordan. He currently resides in Dubai and is presenting a weekly infotainment show called Showmemore which is presented in Arabic and highlights the latest offering in TV, film and celebrity interviews. Among the stars interviewed for Showmemore are; Academy Award winning French actress Juliette Binoche, reggae singing sensation Shaggy, soul music superstar John Legend, 2008 Miss Universe DayanaMendoza, fashion Icon Roberto Cavalli and hit maker James Blunt, to name but a few.

In early 2009, Chung went to Hollywood and interviewed the cast of various hit TV shows including; Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lily and Michael Emerson from LOST, Eva Longoria, James Denton, Dana Delaney and Doug Savant from Desperate Housewives, Vanessa Williams and America Ferrera from Ugly Betty, Jennifer Love Hewitt from Ghost Whisperer, Joe Mantegna and Shemar Moore from Criminal Minds, Tim Daly, Taye Diggs and Kate Walsh from Private Practice, Rob Lowe from Brothers and Sisters and Eric Dane, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens and Kevin McKidd from Greys Anatomy.
