MHYC's YouthBuild program as Program Specialist facilitating leadership classes and leading service projects

Xavier Jennings, 21, from East Denver was the youngest of 5 children raised by a single mother. At the age of 13 he began dealing drugs, joined a gang and became involved in the street life and court system. He dropped out of school at 17. At 18 he found YouthBuild at Mile High Youth Corps(MHYC) and has been there ever since. Graduating successfully from YouthBuild in December 2008, with his GED, Xavier earned the Denver Metro Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award in 2009. He currently attends the Community College of Denver , works for MHYC's YouthBuild program as Program Specialist facilitating leadership classes and leading service projects for program participants including a mentoring project for middle school students. He coaches basketball and football in a local youth leagues and recently became a father. His goal is to become a PE teacher or start his own non-profit for youth. Other highlights include, meeting President Obama, an active member of the V.O.I.C.E.S Council, and getting promoted to staff at Mile High Youth Corps.
