Born in Paris on October 7, 1955, Yo-Yo Ma is an American cellist known for his diverse performances and collaborations. Being a child prodigy, Ma began performing at the age of four and a half and has since recorded over 90 albums, 19 of which have garnered Grammy Awards. His musical ventures span various genres, from American bluegrass to traditional Chinese melodies, and include collaborations with artists like Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, and Miley Cyrus. Ma's primary performance instrument is the Davidov cello, crafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1712, a testament to his commitment to the rich heritage of music.
Recognized for his contributions to music, Ma has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize, the Glenn Gould Prize, the National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His educational background includes the Juilliard School, Harvard University, and the Marlboro Music Festival, highlighting his dedication to both performance and academia. Beyond his musical pursuits, Ma has been a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2006 and was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, emphasizing his commitment to global harmony and cultural exchange.
