Yvonne van Amerongen is a pioneer in the field of dementia care, renowned for her innovative and compassionate approach to elderly care. She is best known as one of the co-founders of the Hogeweyk, a groundbreaking residential community in the Netherlands designed specifically for people living with severe dementia. The Hogeweyk, often referred to as the “dementia village,” challenges traditional nursing home models by creating a safe, familiar, and engaging environment that closely resembles everyday life. This model has received international acclaim for its emphasis on dignity, autonomy, and quality of life for residents.
Van Amerongen’s journey in dementia care began in the 1990s when she and her colleagues at the Hogewey nursing home in Weesp recognized the limitations of conventional care models. Motivated by a desire to provide a better quality of life for people with dementia, she helped conceive the idea of creating a village-like environment where residents could live as normally as possible. In 2009, this vision became a reality with the opening of the Hogeweyk, which features streets, parks, a grocery store, and homes designed to reflect different lifestyles, allowing residents to maintain a sense of familiarity and purpose.
Her work at the Hogeweyk has influenced dementia care globally, inspiring similar projects in Europe, North America, and beyond. Van Amerongen has become a sought-after speaker and consultant, sharing her insights and advocating for a more humane and personalized approach to dementia care. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the individual needs and preferences of people with dementia and creating environments that promote social interaction, physical activity, and emotional well-being.
In recognition of her contributions, Van Amerongen has received numerous awards and accolades. Her efforts continue to inspire healthcare professionals and caregivers around the world to rethink how we care for those living with dementia, promoting a model that values respect, empathy, and the belief that a meaningful life is possible for everyone, regardless of their cognitive abilities.
