Zachary Nelson

President and CEO, NetSuite, Inc.

I am a general anthropologist who focuses on Mesoamerican archaeology, especially the Maya civilization of Guatemala and Mexico. I consider myself a generalist, although I have developed skills in Remote Sensing, Mapping and Survey, Lithic Analysis, and Maya Epigraphy.

Archaeology is one of the last fields, where an interest in humanity and science can play out in harmony. Because many facets of past cultures were intricately connected, I am interested in the breadth of past civilizations. I study their material remains, writings, pictures, settlement and read widely to better understand the past, and how to represent it.

I use computers extensively to model and depict aspects of Maya civilization that do not lend themselves to simple two-dimensional representation. I use a breadth of computer programs in my renderings. I generally start with Photoshop, move to CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator, sometimes to AutoCAD and then to Alias Maya 7. When working with topography, I start with points taken in the field via a Topcon Total Station, then move to Excel and ArcGIS. From ArcGIS, I create a TIN. The TIN can be exported to a format that Maya recognizes and incorporated into the scene.
