Garbiñe Muguruza

Former Professional Tennis Player & Two-Time Grand Slam Champion

Garbiñe Muguruza is a Spanish-Venezuelan professional tennis player renowned for her powerful baseline game and aggressive playing style. The two-time Grand Slam winner, who won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon the following year, formally announced her retirement from tennis in April 2024. She played her last professional singles match in January 2023.

Muguruza began playing tennis at the tender age of three, inspired by her elder brothers who were also involved in the sport. Her breakthrough came in 2014 when she reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, announcing her arrival on the global tennis stage. The following year, she reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, where she faced Serena Williams. In a stunning display of skill and determination, Muguruza defeated Williams in straight sets to claim her maiden Grand Slam title.

Muguruza's career continued to soar as she consistently performed at the highest level, clinching numerous titles on both the WTA Tour and Grand Slam circuit. Her aggressive playing style, characterized by her powerful groundstrokes and formidable serve, made her a formidable opponent on any surface. She reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 1 in the world by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 10.

In all, Muguruza won ten WTA Tour singles titles, the 2021 WTA Finals, and finished runner-up at both the 2015 Wimbledon Championships and the 2020 Australian Open. She represented Spain in two Olympic Games -- Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021 -- as well as the Fed Cup.
