Swiss artist Hannes Schmid has been establishing a relevant body of work since the early 1970s. Schmid started his career with travel reports. For many years he worked as an advertising and fashion photographer. His re-creation of the Marlboro Man, mostly created in the 1990s, has become an iconic figure known all over the world and has been even appropriated by conceptual artists.

Likewise, his unique images of Rockstars and the subsequent publication Hannes Schmid – Rockstars have gained wide recognition. In addition to commercial jobs, Hannes Schmid also completed many freelance artistic projects such as For Gods Only, The Flow of Life, Thaipusam and Moment of a Moment.

Besides his photographic projects, Schmid’s artistic works also comprise of paintings, films and installations, and have been exhibited at numerous venues, including the Swiss Foundation of Photography in Winterthur, Museum Folkwang in Essen, Rubin Museum of Art in New York, Edwynn Houk Gallery (New York, Zurich), Brooklyn Museum in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig. In September 2012, Schmid participated for the second time at St. Moritz Art Masters.

Between March and July 2013 a large retrospective show (solo exhibition) on Hannes Schmid’s work took place at the Museum of Fine Arts in Berne, Switzerland. In 2014, the Today Art Museum in Beijing hosted the Swiss artists multimedia exhibition MOMENTOUS.

Hannes Schmid lives close to Zurich, is married and has two children.
